Frequently Asked Questions

What is Physical Therapy?

Physical Therapy is a healthcare specialty that combines the "science of healing and the art of caring" to evaluate, treat and diagnose musculoskeletal dysfunction. It is a hands-on approach to healthcare. Physical therapists (PT) perform a comprehensive analysis of movement patterns; identify the cause of your pain, and work to eliminate it. PT's identify joint dysfunction, soft tissue limitations, muscle imbalances and structural pathologies. The ultimate goal of physical therapy is to restore maximal functional movement to each patient. To achieve this goal PT's use a variety of treatment methods to create changes in tissue and movement patterns. Treatments may consist of restorative exercises, manual therapy techniques which includes various joint/soft tissue mobilization, education and modalities such as ultrasound or electrical stimulation. While each patient's pain is unique, the physical therapist may use different techniques to first decrease the pain. As the pain decreases, the therapist will progress to restorative stretching and strengthening specific to your needs. A strong emphasis will be on education to not only assist in the restorative goals but prevention of recurrence of the same or other injuries.

Will treatment hurt?

While the goal of physical therapy is to decrease pain and restore mobility pain levels often fluctuate. There may be discomfort especially in the beginning which is a normal response. Good communication with your therapist will help minimize any discomfort.

What is a Physical Therapist?

Physical therapists are licensed professionals who work with people that have sustained injuries, impairments or limitations in their physical functions. These dysfunctions can be the result of disease, accidents, pathological processes or structural strains. Physical Therapists must obtain either a Masters degree or a doctorate in physical therapy from an accredited graduate program and pass an examination to be licensed by the state in which they practice. Physical therapists examine, evaluate, diagnose, develop treatment plans and provide ongoing education to each patient. Through the use of modalities, such as restorative exercise, joint/soft tissue mobilization & manipulation physical therapists restore function, improve mobility and decrease pain with the goal of re-establishing a patient's prior level of function.
